CHINA, Guangdong, Foshan; Qing dynasty

Su Liupeng, also known as Zhenqin or Zendaoren was a painter from Shunde, Foshan. He began painting at a young age and later learned from Master Dekun at Baoji Temple in Guangdong. Su mastered the art of figure painting, and followed the style of Huang Shen and other painters of the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368). He painted the characters of Buddhism, Daoism and people in daily life so vividly that he was recognized as the leading painter of characters in Lingnan (southern China), and regarded alongside Su Renshan as one of the Two Su’s. He was also became famous for his skills in finger painting.
Landscape and flower paintings by Su are considered elegant in color and artistic in conception. Report of Victory at Dongshan, Late Night Study by the Oil Lamp, and Drunken Poet Li Bai are all kept at the Guangzhou Art Museum in Guangdong. In addition, Bodhidharma, which is kept at the Guangdong Provincial Museum in Guangzhou is representative of Su’s simplistic, bold, and well-defined style.
