Buddha Teaching the Dharma repainted by Dong An; Qing dynasty, dated 1878

Dong An

CHINA; Qing dynasty

Dong An was a folk artist who was known to have repainted the murals in the Great Hero Hall of Huayan Upper Temple in Shanxi. First constructed during the Liao dynasty (907–1125), and renovated numerous times since, the hall is marked with ink inscriptions that read “Painted by Dong An of Donghuafu in Yunzhong.” Yunzhong was the former name of Datong in Shanxi and Donghuafu referred to the folk art gallery established and run by Dong An. These murals, which include multiple depiction of the Buddha Teaching the Dharma, are brightly colored and well-preserved.
