Wang Kui was an imperial court painter. Among his works, the most notable are the murals he painted in Manjusri Hall of Wutaishan Yanshan Temple in Shanxi. An inscription dates the works to 1167, when he was 68 years old.
Scenes from the Life of the Buddha on the west wall of Manjusri Hall are attributed to Wang, along with other painters. On the east wall is Teaching the Dharma with a depiction of Hariti and the Illustration of the Returning Favors Sutra - Chapter on Filial Piety on either side. Several other sutra illustrations appear on the other walls of the temple hall. Each mural composition was carried out with meticulous and detailed lines, with bright gold over emerald color to exhibit the lavish painting style of the royal court.
