Zhao Shoujun

CHINA; Liao dynasty

Zhao Shoujun was a woodblock artisan. During the Liao dynasty (907–1125), Yanjing (present day Beijing) was the center of the woodblock printing industry. As a result of the good economy and advanced technology during this time, the woodblocks for the Khitan Tripitaka were able to be carved. There were several artisans with excellent skills, and among them was Zhou.
In 1974, Liao dynasty artifacts were found inside the Sakyamuni Buddha statue within Fogong Temple Shijia Pagoda in Shanxi. Twelve fascicles of sutras from the Khitan Tripitaka were found in this collection of items. Inscriptions on some of the fascicles identify Zhou among the carvers who produced the work.
