Qiao Zhongchang was a painter from Hezhong (present day Yongji, Shanxi). He studied under Li Gonglin, and his paintings of Buddhist figures and stories are said to emanate an aura of tranquility.
Representative work by Qiao includes the Sixteen Arhats, which illustrates the figures with exquisite detail and vivid expressions. Another work, Illustration of the Latter Rhyme on the Red Cliffs, which depicts an autobiographical prose by the great Chinese poet Su Shi, is currently kept in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Many of his works are recorded in Continuation of Paintings.
