Li Yongji was a painter who was skilled in creating Buddhist and Daoist themed paintings, portraits, horses, ghosts, and gods. He inherited Han Gan’s style of horse painting, and his depictions of Buddhist and Daoist figures followed the style of Wu Daozi. His strokes appear assertive and athletic with an unrestrained form.
Li painted the murals at Xiangguo Temple in Henan alongside Gao Wenjin and Wang Daozhen in 975. In addition, he co-painted the Battle Between Sariputra and Raudraksa on the east side of the main hall with Li Xiangkun. Several of Li’s works are recorded in Evaluation of Famous Painters of the Song Dynasty and Overview of Painting.
