Sun Mengqing, also known as Fuzhi, was a painter from Yunzhou, Xuchang (present day Dongping, Tai’an). He greatly admired the work of Wu Daozi, and was adept in painting Buddhist and Daoist images.
The majority of Sun’s works were temple murals, with some scroll pieces. He once worked alongside Wang Ai in the painting of murals on the west and east walls of Manjusri Pavilion behind the main hall of Kaibao Temple in Henan. On the west wall, he painted Virapaksa, Heavenly King of the North and Vajrapani. In addition, he painted murals at Xiangguo Temple in Henan.
Xuanhe Catalog of Paintings recorded three of his works including Taishang Laojun, Ge Hong the Immortal, and Pine Trees and Rocks Inquiring About Chan. His paintings were also noted in Overview of Painting and Evaluation of Famous Painters of the Song Dynasty.
