Li Zhaoqing

CHINA, Jiangsu, Nanjing; Southern Tang Kingdom

Li Zhaoqing was a painter and scholar of the Hanlin Academy from either Nanjing of Jiangsu or Yichun of Jiangxi. According to Overview of Painting, Li followed Emperor Li Yu (reigned 961–975) to the newly established Song capital and became a civil servant in the Imperial Art Academy. During this time, it was recorded in Evaluation of Famous Painters of the Song Dynasty that Li requested a quiet and empty room in which he would spent most of his time painting. He was an expert in depicting figures, particularly Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. His paintings display dedicated craftsmanship and vibrant colors.
