Gao Daoxing

CHINA, Sichuan, Chengdu; Former Shu Kingdom

Gao Daoxing was an artist who was particularly well known for his paintings of the Buddha and eminent monks. Due to his rushed painting style, he was often described as being able to complete a work by simply dropping his brush.
Gao and Zhao Deqi were once requested to create a painting of Prince Pingxi for Emperor Gaozu (reigned 903–918) of the Former Shu Kingdom. The horses, carriages, flags, and Dharma instruments in the painting were detailed and precise. Gao was also known to have painted over 100 murals in the imperial palace. As a result, he was appointed painter-in-attendance by Emperor Gaozu.
Several of Gao’s murals, including the mural of Monks at Daci Temple in Sichuan, were compiled in Records of Famous Paintings in Yizhou.
