Du Zigui

CHINA, Sichuan, Chengdu; Former Shu Kingdom

Du Zigui was a painter who served as painter-in-attendance at the Hanlin Academy. As an expert colorist, he developed his own distinct style and excelled in painting image of the Buddha.
Du is known for his vivid depiction of Vairocana Buddha at Dongchan Temple in Sichuan. The figure is backed by a nimbus, which Du described as a resemblance to the rising sun. Colors are smooth without any trace of brushstrokes. Other works by Du are listed in Xuanhe Catalog of Paintings, Records of Famous Paintings in Yizhou, and Chengdu Temple Records.
