Wang Wen was a sculptor who was known for his skills in painting and decorating statues and architectural elements. He decorated the Maitreya Bodhisattva statue built by monk Huiyun in 706 at Xiangguo Temple in Henan, as well as the pair of Heavenly Kings at the main temple gate. These refined works were renowned as one of the top ten features of Xiangguo Temple and were noted in Overview of Painting.
The colorful decorative work on the Maitreya Bodhisattva statue that Wang completed was also highly praised in Addendum to the Famous Paintings of the Five Dynasties. The book describes the work as giving a realistic sense of the future coming of Maitreya.
