Song Chao

CHINA; Tang dynasty

Song Chao was a sculptor who, as recorded in Famous Paintings in History, carved a statue of Maitreya Buddha alongside a group of artists that included Qiao’er and Zhang Shou in 665. The image, located under a tree at a shrine within Jing’ai Temple in Henan, was based on painting samples brought back from India by Master Song Fazhi. Wang Xuance, a sculptor who accompanied Master Song Fazhi on the voyage to India, directed the sculpting of the Maitreya Buddha, while Lee An did the gold foil painting.
