CHINA, Shaanxi, Xi’an; Tang dynasty

Chang Can was an artist who was skilled in the portrayal of figures and Buddhist imagery. His artworks that were listed in Records of Famous Paintings in Yizhou include several Buddhist figures. This painting, together with Li Sheng’s landscape murals from the Former Shu Kingdom (907–925), the horizontal inscribed board written by monk Daoying, and the inscription written by Li Shangying of the Late Tang period (846–907), were known as the Four Wonders. 14 of Chang’s paintings were also listed in Xuanhe Catalog of Paintings.
