Zhu Qian

CHINA, Shaanxi, Xi’an; Tang dynasty

Zhu Qian was a painter from Chang’an (present day Xi’an, Shaanxi). He was a painter-in-attendance at the Hanlin Academy and specialized in painting Buddhist images. Zhu sought refuge in Shu (present day Sichuan) during the rule of Emperor Xizong (reigned 873–888), a period during which he painted a large Buddhist mural in the Huayan Chamber at Daci Temple in Sichuan. This work was recorded in both Records of Famous Paintings in Yizhou and Overview of Painting.
