Du Zongjing

Du Zongjing was an artist who was skilled in painting Buddhist images, human figures, structures, and landscapes. When the poet, Bai Juyi, resolved to construct Xiangshan Temple in Henan, he sought after Du to create a mural of the Western Pure Land.
According to Record of the Western Pure Land Illustrations, authored by Bai, the painting was 264 cm high by 88 cm wide. It features a central image of Amitabha Buddha, accompanied by Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattvas. Also depicted in the painting are various structures, musicians, plants, and birds, all of which are colorfully decorated and embellished with precious ornaments.
