Zuo Quan

CHINA, Sichuan; Tang dynasty

Zuo Quan was an artist from Shu (present day Sichuan). His family was well educated, and their painting skills were passed down from one generation to another. Exhibiting the style of Wu Daozi, Zuo excelled in creating Buddhist and Daoist paintings. His works became increasingly popular during the 800s, and several of his works can be found in Chengdu, Sichuan and Chang’an (present day Xi’an, Shaanxi).
According to Records of Famous Paintings in Yizhou, Zuo painted several murals at Daci Temple in Sichuan. The mural of Vimalakirti in the main hall of Shengshou Temple in Sichuan, which dates to 847, is also attributed to him. Other paintings by Zuo are also recorded in Overview of Painting.
