Xin Cheng

CHINA; Tang dynasty

Xin Cheng was a Buddhist painter who, according to Records of Famous Paintings in Yizhou, was asked to paint the murals in Sakyamuni Buddha Hall which was newly built in 780 at Daci Temple in Sichuan. He is also known to have produced many sutra illustrations. In the Samantabhadra Pavilion, he further painted murals of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, Nine Small Buddhas, and Cintamanicakra Avalokitesvara.
As recorded in Xuanhe Catalog of Paintings, Xin created over 20 Buddhist paintings depicting such figures as Ratnasambhava Buddha, Avalokitesvara in a White Robe, Maitreya Bodhisattva, Vajrapani Bodhisattva, Manjusri Bodhisattva, and more.
