Che Daozheng

CHINA; Tang dynasty

Che Daozheng was a painter who was skilled in depicting Buddha images, human figures, and sutra illustrations using strong, concise brushstrokes. He was once ordered by Emperor Xuanzong (reigned 712–756) of the Tang dynasty to travel to Gaochang, Xinjiang to bring back the iconography of Vaisravana Heavenly King of the North. He was later commissioned to paint the image of the Heavenly King based on the iconography at Xiangguo Temple in Henan. Today, it is one of the celebrated scenes at the temple.
