Wang Shaozong

CHINA, Shandong, Linyi; Tang dynasty

Wang Shaozong, also known as Chenglie, was an artist who originated from Langya (present day Linyi, Shandong) and later relocated to Jiangdu (present day Yangzhou, Jiangsu). Born to a poor family, he lived in a monastery, and made a living by writing manuscripts. Under the tutelage of Yin Zhongrong, he learned both clerical script and cursive script calligraphy, as well as painting.
Between 685 and 688, General Xu Jingye invited Wang to be part of his army, but he declined. Instead, Empress Wu Zetian (reigned 684–705) recruited him to be in charge of the library. His biography has been recorded in books such as Famous Paintings in History and Book of Tang.
