Jin Zhiyi was a painter who was considered to be a pioneer of Buddhist art during the early stage of Buddhism’s spread in China. His teacher, Cao Zhongda, hailed from the Central Asia and was widely known for his Cao style of painting. Jin transformed this style and consequently made critical strides in the localization of Chinese Buddhist art. The distinct Chinese style seen in the Buddhist paintings of renowned Tang dynasty painter, Wu Daozi, may have been inspired by Jin’s works.
