Han Botong

CHINA; Sui to Tang dynasty

Han Botong was an imperial sculptor and painter who was skilled in realistic depictions of Buddhist and Daoist figures. His name is listed in the Famous Paintings in history. According to the biography of Master Daoxuan in Song Biographies of Eminent Monks, Master Daoxuan passed away in 667. Subsequently, Emperor Gaozong (reigned 649–683) of the Tang dynasty issued an edict to have Chong Shi paint the portrait of Master Daoxuan, and Han Botong to create a statue of the master. Fascicle 10 of Records of Chang’an notes the creation of Buddha statues by Han Botong in Dayun Temple.
