Zheng Fashi

CHINA, Jiangsu, Suzhou; Northern Zhou to Sui dynasty

Zheng Fashi was a painter from Wu (present day Suzhou, Jiangsu). He was appointed as a military governor in the Northern Zhou dynasty (557–581), and during the Sui dynasty (581–618), he worked as the Palace Attendant Grandee.
Painting Annals of the Zhenguan Period records such paintings by Zheng as Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty Entering the Buddha Hall, King Asoka, and more. According to Famous Paintings in History, murals illustrated by Zheng include the Life of the Buddha - Parinirvana at Yongtai Temple in Xi’an, in addition to others at temples such as Kaiye Temple, Qingchan Temple, and Yanxing Temple. Xuanhe Catalog of Paintings records 10 of his paintings, such as Touring the Mountain in Spring, and Reading the Stele.
His brother Zheng Falun and his son Zheng Dewen inherited his skills and also became proficient painters.
