Chen Shanjian

CHINA, Jiangsu, Suzhou; Sui dynasty

Taught by Zheng Fashi and Yang Zihua, Chen Shanjian was a skillful painter of Buddhist and Daoist figures. He specialized in copying classic paintings, and his illustration style was enchanting and realistic. According to Famous Paintings in History, the mural at Chanding Temple in Xi’an, Shaanxi was painted by Chen.
