Liu Shagui

CHINA; Northern Qi dynasty

Liu Shagui was a painter and provincial official who specialized in painting birds and nature. It is said that his depictions were so realistic, that one time Emperor Wucheng (reigned 561–565) tried to wave them off the wall in vain, mistaking the images for real birds.
Liu was well-respected in the palace and was often highly rewarded for his paintings. The royal family during the Northern Qi dynasty (550–877) ordered the construction of a cave temple in which Liu’s artwork is contained. Additionally, Painting Annals of the Zhenguan Period makes notation of the murals he painted at Dading Temple in Hebei.
