Zhang Shanguo

CHINA, Jiangsu, Suzhou; Southern Liang dynasty

Zhang Shanguo was a painter from Wu (present day Suzhou, Jiangsu). During the Liang dynasty (502–557) he moved to Wuxing (present day Huzhou, Zhejiang). He inherited his talents for painting from his father Zhang Sengyou, who was also a famous painter during the Southern Dynasties.
Skilled in painting Buddhist and Daoist characters, Li Sizhen of the Tang dynasty (618–907) described Zhang’s paintings as great and almost as good as his father’s. His famous paintings include the Wedding of Prince Siddhartha, and the murals at numerous temples including Qixia Temple in Jiangsu. Zhang’s paintings are listed in Famous Paintings in History and Painting Annals of the Zhenguan Period.
