Motomachi: Medicine Buddha

JAPAN, Oita; Heian period

This figure of the Medicine Buddha was carved into a cliff face in the late 12th century and has been nicknamed the “Cliff Medicine Buddha.” The site is listed as a National Historic Site.
The lower body and wrists of the central Buddha figure are damaged but the youthful features and burly physique are apparent. The monastic robe across the shoulders is carved with shallow folds. The Buddha sits on a square platform with lotus petals traced on the surface, while behind are traces of a double-layered mandorla. Vaisravana and Acala, the attendants to the right and left, are both seriously damaged.
