An inscription beside this image on the south wall reads, “Ninth Senior Monk of Gandhamadana, the Great Arhat Jivaka, along with his group of 900 Arhats. The Buddha asked them not to enter nirvana but to stay in this world to benefit others.” The Arhat appears elderly, with white facial hair and a wrinkled neck. He wears layered patchwork robes, sits on a rug placed on a rock pedestal, and leans to one side, grasping a long, twisted walking stick in both hands. Flowers with long stems surround the Arhat. The smaller figure of a monk stands on the right, looking towards the Arhat and joining the palms in reverence. The scene is painted in bold, solid lines.
