Mogao Cave 95: Pindola

Mogao Cave 95: Pindola

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Yuan dynasty

Constructed during the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), Cave 95 is located in the central section of the south area of the Mogao Cave site. Arhats are painted on all four walls of the cave.
This image, located on the south wall, is thought to be a depiction of the Arhat Pindola. The figure has a thin mustache and long eyebrows that extend past the knees. An armlet and a bracelet adorn the body. The robes are arranged so that the right shoulder is left bare. The Arhat sits on a bamboo chair, leaning slightly forward against a long wooden staff held in both hands. On the left is a monk who holds a tray upon which the trailing eyebrows of Pindola rest. The long eyebrows, a symbol of longevity, are the focus of the mural.
