Mogao Cave 98: Uighur Princess as Donor

This image is located to the left of the entrance on the front (east) wall. The taller woman on the right is the Uighur princess. An inscription reads, “This princess is the great Uighur king’s daughter.” She was also the wife of Cao Yijin, governor of the Guiyi Army in Dunhuang at the time. The princess wears a petal-shaped crown decorated with a phoenix image, and has blush on her full, round cheeks. Her hands are clasped together in front of her chest. The other woman in the image has a similar posture and appearance. Both figures wear necklaces and long red robes with wide sleeves. This was the typical attire of Uighur noblewomen from Ganzhou (present day Zhangye, Gansu).
