The Thousand Buddhas from the High Tang period (712–756) are found on the slopes of the ceiling of Cave 79. All the Buddhas are seated in full lotus position on lotus thrones. They have similar features but differ in the color of their bodies, robes, nimbuses, and aureoles. The lotus thrones also vary in color while maintaining a uniform design. Naked children with short, plump arms and legs are depicted alongside the Thousand Buddhas. The children offer lotuses and play happily, adopting various postures, in contrast to the highly structured Buddhas. These added figures are rarely seen in murals of the Thousand Buddhas.
