Mogao Cave 260: Apsara

Mogao Cave 260: Apsara

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Wei dynasty

This image is painted on the north wall. The apsara turns while flying through the air, with the torso upright and the legs trailing behind. One hand is raised above the head and the other is placed in front of the chest. The figure has a nimbus and simple features. The long lower garment has a swirling blue pattern and rippling folds. A large stole flows around the apsara in dramatic waves as the figure appears to swoop and dive as if dancing in the air.
