Pujiang Feixiange Rock Carvings Niche 55: Avalokitesvara and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Sichuan, Chengdu; Tang dynasty

These reliefs are located on the back wall of Niche 55. The niche measures 2.7 m in width, 2.15 m in height, and 1.24 m in depth. Two representations of Avalokitesvara stand upon lotus pedestals, flanking Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva on the back wall. The upper torsos of the Avalokitesvara figures are covered with stoles wrapped diagonally over the shoulders. Ksitigarbha in the center is depicted as a monk, wearing a blue robe that is decorated with large flower designs.
