Mogao Cave 204: Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This figure is located to the right of the niche on the back (west) wall of Cave 204. The sculpture has been repaired but the original features are still clear. The Bodhisattva has a round face with a serene expression, and wears a tall headdress, necklace, and bracelets. The palms are joined in reverence before the chest. Though the piece displays many of the characteristics of Sui dynasty (581–618) sculpture, the more delicate features of the Early Tang (618–712) style are also apparent.
