Mogao Cave 196: Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva

Mogao Cave 196: Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This image is on the lower left side of the front (east) wall within the main chamber. The Bodhisattva faces away from the viewer and wears a jeweled crown over hair tied in a topknot. A flowing stole is wrapped around both arms. The right hand grasps the stole, and the left hand holds a lotus flower. The Bodhisattva wears a long lower garment and appears to step forward slowly. An inscription within a cartouche on the upper left states: “Homage to Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva.” The image is painted in fine, fluid lines and refreshing colors. The presentation of the figure walking away from the viewer is uncommon.
