These Late Tang period (846–907) figures are painted to either side of the east niche of the central pillar within the main chamber. The two warriors have wide eyes and wear long blue stoles wrapped around their bodies. Their hair is tied in topknots and they stand barefoot with their feet apart. The large bodies have bulging muscles and red skin. They each have one hand raised above the head with fingers outstretched. The warrior on the right is bright red and his lips are tightly pressed together. His lowered right hand forms a tight fist. The other warrior holds a weapon in his left hand and opens his mouth, appearing to shout.
