Mogao Cave 85: Ceiling

Mogao Cave 85: Ceiling

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

The truncated pyramidal ceiling of Cave 85 was painted during the Late Tang period (846–907). In the center, a lion is encircled by lotus flowers. Swirling clouds surround the lotuses, and in each corner are stylized lotus motifs. Squares of patterning surround the central circle, including diamonds, foliage, pennants with miniature trefoil designs, and valances. On the slopes of the ceiling are narrative illustrations of the Lankavatara Sutra, Lotus Sutra, Maitreya Sutras, and Avatamsaka Sutra. The work is well preserved and features luminous colors.
