
In 1959 the monk Hsuan Hua established the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association in the US. In 1974 land was acquired and the building of the temple commenced. It is the hub of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association, with over 20 branch temples worldwide. The temple occupies an area of 197.5 ha with buildings covering 32.4 ha. It is a huge complex consisting of over 70 large buildings, including the main temple gate, the Jeweled Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas, the Tathagata Monastery, the Great Compassion House, the Joyous Giving House, the Wonderful Words Hall, the Ordination Hall, the Rebirth Hall, the Life Lengthening Hall, and the Tower of Blessings. The complex also houses the Dharma Realm Buddhist University and two schools.
The main temple gate is three bays wide and built in traditional Chinese architectural style. The Jeweled Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas is decorated with a large seated Buddha statue above its entrance, and paintings of Heavenly Kings on the sides. A 6 m high standing statue of the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara is enshrined within the hall. Its walls are adorned with 10,000 images of the Buddha.
