Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva - Universal Gateway Chapter

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Ming dynasty

This late Ming dynasty line drawing shows the barefooted Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva sitting on a couch. The Bodhisattva has a plain nimbus and a topknot adorned with a Buddha image. Next to Avalokitesvara, there is a bowl of water containing a willow branch. A ruler was used to draw precise lines for the couch and back screen. On the screen, there are hexagonal patterns with small images of precious objects painted inside, and the “Universal Gateway Chapter” of the Lotus Sutra written in small characters. The painting bears the seal imprints of many collectors.
