Seated Buddha

Gilt bronze

Seated Buddha

CHINA; Qing dynasty

The Buddha is seated in full lotus position on a double lotus throne with the right hand in the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. Sharp curls cover the head and the high usnisa decorated with a jewel. The eyebrows are incised and join to form the flattened ridge of the nose. The ears are elongated and the three lines on the neck are very pronounced, both characteristics listed among the Buddha’s Thirty-Two Marks of Excellence. The monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare and reveals the pleated edge of an inner robe. The folds of the garment are realistically depicted, as are the details of the nails on both hands.
