Loving-Kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity

Loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are the Four Immeasurables, or the sublime states of mind that all Bodhisattvas possess in order to aid sentient beings in avoiding suffering and obtaining happiness.
This seal appears in ancient style and utilizes the works of the Qin dynasty (221–207 BCE) as its model. Encased in a double border, the four characters of this work, composed in bell and cauldron script, are arranged in two rows with two characters each. Following a simple antiquated style with ancient features, this piece was created by Wang Beiyue in 1992.
Wang Beiyue was originally known as Zeheng and also known as Zicang. He was a calligrapher, painter, and seal engraver who was taught by He Kongcai. Wang went to Taiwan in 1949 and founded the Hai Jiao Seal Collection with Wang Zhuang-Wei and Ceng Shaojie. In addition, he organized the Republic of China Society of Seal Engraving. Wang authored several books including Wang Beiyue Calligraphy and Seal Engraving Collection, Wang Beiyue Calligraphy Collection, and Wang Beiyue Self-Use Seal Engraving Collection.
