Taiyuan: Arhat

Taiyuan: Arhats

CHINA, Shanxi, Taiyuan; Northern Song dynasty

The origins of these statues are unknown except that they were acquired in Taiyuan. The higher figure is seated on a block and wears a monastic robe that is held in place with the left hand while the right hand rests on the thigh. The figure has a prominent brow ridge that is framed by thick eyebrows. The other Arhat is also robed and sits in the royal ease posture with the head and body inclined to one side and hands resting on the raised knee.
