Western Thousand Buddha Cave 9: Niche Lintel

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Western Wei dynasty

This lintel is located above the niche on the south side of the central pillar. Cave 9 is the only Western Thousand Cave constructed during the Western Wei dynasty (535–556), although the remaining images and carvings vary in age due to repeated repairs. The lintel is one of the remaining original pieces in the cave. However, the seated Buddha within the niche and the two flanking disciples were repaired during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911).
The lintel is surrounded by a swirling cloud pattern and has an illustration of a Bodhisattva, most likely Maitreya, flanked by two other Bodhisattvas. The figures are painted in vivid colors on a mineral green background. Each Bodhisattva has a canopy over their head and wears a crown, a red lower garment, and a stole. Five apsaras are located on each side of the Bodhisattvas either flying, playing musical instruments, or making offerings. Painted on the left side of the mural is a figure who appears to be running swiftly.
