Western Thousand Buddha Cave 7: Standing Bodhisattvas

Western Thousand Buddha Cave 7: Standing Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Wei dynasty

This painting is located on the right side of the central pillar’s east face. Both Bodhisattvas wear triple-disc crowns with ribbons, long stoles, and dhotis. A three-dimensional technique was used to paint the whites of the Bodhisattvas’ eyes. The technique was also used on the outlines of the stoles and on the Bodhisattvas’ earrings.
