Banyunibo Temple

Banyunibo Temple

INDONESIA, Central Java, Sleman

This temple was built in the 9th century. The site of the ruins was discovered in 1940, but restoration work was not completed until 1976.
Only the main shrine is preserved. It is 14.3 m high, and the base is 15.3 m long and 14.3 m wide. It is built of andesite blocks and faces west. In front of the main entrance there is a portico. Reliefs of kirtimukhas are found above the entrance and windows, both on the outside and on the inside. Along the outer walls there are relief carvings that include Hariti, yaksas, and kinnaras. The roof of the temple is in the shape of a truncated pyramid, upon which there is a stupa in the shape of an inverted bowl. There used to be six stone stupas on two sides of the main shrine, but only the stupa bases remain.
