Kizil New Cave 1: Astrological Signs

Kizil New Cave 1: Astrological Signs

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

These astrological signs are located on the barrel-vaulted ceiling in the right corridor. From top to bottom, there are nagas, Vayu, nagas, and Surya. The nagas soar through the clouds in groups of three, and emit steam from their mouths. Vayu, the wind deity, is also concealed in clouds, stretching out the left arm. There are radial patterns in the middle of Surya, with four geese surrounding the edges. Caves excavated during the prosperous period of Kizil commonly had astrological signs painted on the ceilings of the corridors.
