Niujiaozhai Rock Carvings Niche 2: Illustration of the Amitayurdhyana Sutra

This niche is sculpted to illustrate the Amitayurdhyana Sutra. It dates to the Mid-Tang period (756–846) and contains 117 figures arranged in an orderly fashion.
A bridge is depicted at the bottom of the niche with numerous heavenly dancers and musicians gathered under and in front of the structure. The round vase, located at the center of the bridge, is protected by deities and auspicious creatures. The Amitabha Buddha Triad near the top of the niche is seated in full lotus position on lotus thrones. Amitabha Buddha has a nimbus and wears a monastic robe that covers both shoulders. Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta flank Amitabha on the right and left, respectively, both with circular nimbuses and aureoles.
Two manifested Bodhisattvas sit under the Amitabha Buddha Triad on lotuses. Additionally, a row of small Buddha images is sculpted on the niche lintel, and the sides of the frame are sculpted with illustrations, eight on each side, depicting the Sixteen Contemplations.
