Chengdu: Standing Buddha

CHINA, Sichuan, Chengdu; Southern Liang dynasty

This statue was found in 1995 and is one of the oldest statues made in the Asoka style in China with a clear date. The oldest Asoka-style statue dates to the Eastern Jin dynasty (317–420) according to records.
The Buddha stands on a lotus pedestal and has curly hair, a prominent usnisa and three lines on the neck that signifies a great person. He has wide eyes, a large nose, mustache, wide mouth, and thick lips. The monastic robe that covers both shoulders hangs down the body in a series of U-shaped folds. A number of seated Buddha figures are visible on the fragment of the nimbus.
The back of the nimbus is covered with images of donors in bas-relief. The inscription on the back of the lotus pedestal states Du Sengyi dedicated the statue in 551 for the benefit of his deceased son and all human beings.
