Shijiazhuang: Bodhisattva in Contemplation

CHINA, Hebei, Shijiazhuang; Eastern Wei dynasty

The Bodhisattva wears a lotus headdress and a wide stole that falls to the base. The figure sits in the contemplative posture with left leg hanging over the throne and crossed above the knee by the right leg, where the right elbow is supported. A large circular nimbus surrounds the head. Most of the facial features are indiscernible. An inscription on the back and sides of the base dates the sculpture to 548 and states a nun Jingzun from Zhangdu Temple donated it.
