Uppugunduru: Standing Buddha

INDIA, Andhra Pradesh, Uppugunduru

The statue was unearthed at Uppugunduru and is in relatively good condition despite the missing arm and hand. The figure is sculpted in the southern Indian style that greatly influenced Sri Lanka and other parts of Southeast Asia. The Buddha has broad shoulders and wears a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare. Raised folds run diagonally across the garment, the broad end of the robe sweeps upward from the feet to drape over the left arm. An urna is just visible between the eyebrows, while the usnisa and extended earlobes are equally understated. The nose and three lines on the neck are given emphasis.
