Mathura: Dwarf

Red sandstone

Mathura: Dwarf

INDIA, Uttar Pradesh, Mathura

Discovered in Govind Nagar, Mathura, only the dwarf’s head and shoulders remain and these too have suffered damage. Pointed ears are the identifying feature of this kind of creature in Indian mythology. The figure wears a collar and armlets without decorations. It looks upwards with a grin of enjoyment at the bowl, decorated with lotus petals on the exterior, which is held high above the head and may have contained an offering such as garlands, flowers or spices. Analysis of reliefs found at Mathura and Amaravati indicates that this kind of statue usually comes as a pair and probably flanked the entrance of a stupa or a temple.
